The Grade Calculator answers the question every student asks before a big exam: what score do I need on the final to reach my target grade? Enter your current grade (as a percentage), the weight the final exam carries toward your overall mark, and the grade you are aiming for. The tool solves for the exact score you must earn on that final assessment.
It also works in reverse as a weighted-average calculator: add each assignment, quiz, midterm, and project with its own percentage weight, and it computes your current overall grade before the final is even entered. It runs entirely in your browser, so you can experiment with different final-exam scenarios instantly.
The required final score is derived from the weighted-grade formula. Your overall grade equals (current grade x weight of completed work) plus (final score x weight of final). Solving for the final score gives: Required Final = (Target - Current x (1 - FinalWeight)) / FinalWeight. For example, with a current grade of 84%, a target of 90%, and a final worth 30%, you need (90 - 84 x 0.70) / 0.30 = (90 - 58.8) / 0.30 = 104%. Because that exceeds 100%, an A is not achievable through the final alone in this scenario.
In weighted-average mode, the tool multiplies each component's score by its weight, sums the results, and divides by the total weight entered. This handles syllabi where weights do not add to 100% yet, so it shows your standing based only on graded work. Letter-grade targets are mapped to common percentage cutoffs (for instance A = 90, B = 80, C = 70), though many institutions use A- and plus/minus bands or a 4.0 scale, so always confirm against your own syllabus.
It means your target grade is mathematically out of reach with the final exam alone, because even a perfect score would not raise your weighted average enough. You would need extra credit or a change to your other scores to hit that target.
Check your course syllabus, which lists how each category contributes to the total grade (for example, homework 20%, midterms 50%, final 30%). Enter the final's percentage in the weight field.
Yes. Use the weighted-average mode to enter each assignment with its score and weight, and the tool computes your current overall grade, which you can then use as the input for the final-exam calculation.
It uses common US cutoffs such as A = 90% and B = 80%, but grading scales vary widely between institutions and even between instructors. Always verify the exact thresholds against your syllabus before relying on the result.
Combine the remaining items into a single weight and treat them as one block, or compute your target for each separately. The formula assumes one final weight, so grouping outstanding work gives the total score you need across it.
Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up. All calculations happen locally in your browser, so your grades and scores are never uploaded or stored on a server.
Yes. Set your target to your passing threshold (often 50%, 60%, or a D), and the tool returns the minimum final score required to stay above that line.
