Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, and line breaks) and counting the non-empty tokens that remain, so consecutive spaces do not inflate the total. Character counts are a direct length measurement: the 'with spaces' figure counts every character including spaces and punctuation, while the 'without spaces' figure removes whitespace first. Sentences are estimated by counting terminal punctuation marks (periods, question marks, and exclamation points), and paragraphs are counted by the blocks of text separated by blank lines.
Reading time uses a standard silent-reading rate of about 200 to 250 words per minute for adult readers. A common formula is reading time in minutes equals total words divided by 225. For example, a 1,000-word article yields roughly 4.4 minutes, which the tool typically rounds to about 4 to 5 minutes. Speaking time, if shown, assumes a slower pace near 130 words per minute since spoken delivery is deliberately slower than reading.
